Your adventure begins as you arrive in Delhi, the bustling capital of India. After you disembark from your flight, the city’s vibrant atmosphere welcomes you. Depending on your arrival time, you might have the opportunity to explore some of Delhi’s iconic landmarks. Visit India Gate, a war memorial dedicated to Indian soldiers, or the towering Qutub Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage site that stands as a testament to the city’s rich history. If time permits, dive into the vibrant markets of Chandni Chowk, where the sights, sounds, and smells of spices and street food create a sensory feast.
Spend your evening soaking in the energy of the city, perhaps enjoying a delicious dinner at a local restaurant, savouring North Indian delicacies like butter chicken, naan, and biryani.
Overnight stay in Delhi. Rest well at your hotel, as you’ll have an early start to your flight to Leh the next day.
In the morning after breakfast you will be transferred to the airport to board a flight to Leh. Upon landing in Leh, you’ll transfer to your hotel and begin the crucial process of acclimatising to the high altitude of 3,500 metres. Leh, with its ancient monasteries and vibrant markets, provides a gentle introduction to Ladakh. Spend the afternoon exploring Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, and the bustling market. As you stroll through the town, the crisp mountain air and the distant snow-capped peaks set the stage for the adventure ahead.
Overnight stay in Leh (3,500 metres). The night will be spent at your hotel, where you will meet your fellow travellers and have a formal introduction. Take rest and acclimate to the altitude. Remember to hydrate well and eat light meals.
Start your day with a leisurely breakfast and prepare for a day of local exploration and acclimatisation. Today, you will be introduced to your Tour Marshall and your motorbikes. You will ride the motorbike around the city with your tour Marshall. It will be a short ride today which will begin with a visit to Thiksey Monastery, one of the largest and most impressive monasteries in Ladakh. Located about 19 kilometres from Leh, this stunning complex is often compared to the Potala Palace in Lhasa. Wander through the various levels of the monastery, admiring the intricate murals and the impressive statue of Maitreya Buddha.
Return to Leh for lunch at a local restaurant, where you can sample delicious Ladakhi cuisine. Post-lunch, visit the Hall of Fame, a museum constructed by the Indian Army in memory of the brave soldiers who lost their lives in the Indo-Pak wars. The museum offers a glimpse into the history, culture, and lifestyle of Ladakh, as well as the heroism of the Indian Army.
You will return to your hotel in the evening and after that you will have more time to stroll through the Leh Market to end your day, browsing through local handicrafts, pashmina shawls, and traditional jewellery. Engage with the friendly locals and perhaps pick up a souvenir or two.
At night, just after the dinner you will be briefed about your itinerary, routes, and challenges. Your Tour Marshall will explain about what to do and what not to do during the ride.
Return to your rooms for a restful night, well-acclimatised and ready for the adventure ahead.
The real adventure kicks off as you leave Leh and ride westward, following the snaking roads of NH1, the legendary Srinagar-Leh highway. The smooth tarmac winds through a surreal landscape, where jagged peaks stand in stark contrast to the deep blue sky.
A stop at Nimmu, where the Indus and Zanskar Rivers merge in a striking display of two different-colored waters, offers the first taste of Ladakh’s unique geography. Further ahead, you pass Magnetic Hill, where vehicles seem to defy gravity and roll uphill on their own.
As you approach Lamayuru, the landscape takes on an otherworldly appearance. The hills here resemble a moonscape, with wind-sculpted rock formations creating an alien-like terrain. Lamayuru is home to one of Ladakh’s oldest and most revered monasteries, perched dramatically on a rugged cliffside. The evening is spent exploring the monastery, absorbing its tranquility, and preparing for an even more remote journey ahead.
Distance: 140 km
Time: 4–5 hours
Leaving Lamayuru, the road becomes narrower, rougher, and more thrilling. The ride follows the wild Zanskar River, cutting through deep gorges where towering cliffs seem to close in around you. The landscapes shift constantly—from arid, dusty tracks to lush green patches where small villages appear like oases in the barren desert.
After a long and exhilarating ride, you reach Padum, the heart of Zanskar Valley. This small town is surrounded by snow-clad peaks and is a hub for Buddhist monasteries and hidden villages. The night is spent at a guesthouse, where stories of past riders and local legends fill the air.
Distance: 175 km
Time: 7–9 hours
Today’s ride takes you even deeper into the untouched wilderness of Zanskar. The road is barely a road—it’s more of a rocky trail with river crossings, landslide-prone sections, and challenging switchbacks. The ride is slow but rewarding, with each turn unveiling a view more stunning than the last.
Upon reaching Purne, a tiny settlement nestled beside the emerald-colored Lungnak River, you settle into a basic homestay. The sense of remoteness is profound—there are no phone signals, no tourist crowds, just the silence of the Himalayas and the occasional flutter of prayer flags in the wind.
Distance: 75 km
Time: 4–5 hours (Rocky trails, river crossings)
For those eager for a spiritual detour, today offers an incredible trek to Phuktal Monastery, one of Ladakh’s most isolated and awe-inspiring monasteries. The trek is moderate, winding along a narrow path carved into the cliffs above the river.
As you approach Phuktal, the sight is surreal—a honeycomb of whitewashed buildings clinging to the cliffs like an eagle’s nest. Monks in deep red robes move silently, their chants echoing through the valley. After exploring the monastery, you trek back to Purne and ride back to Padum, retracing the rugged path.
Trek Distance: 14 km round trip (~7 km each way)
Trek Time: 5–6 hours (Moderate difficulty)
Ride Distance: 75 km (Purne to Padum)
Ride Time: 4–5 hours
Today’s ride is one of the most spectacular of the journey. You traverse winding roads leading to the magnificent Drang Drung Glacier, a vast river of ice tumbling down from the peaks above. Stopping here, you take in the sheer scale of the glacier, with its deep crevasses and brilliant blue ice.
From here, the road continues toward Kargil, a town steeped in history and known for its role in the 1999 Kargil War. After checking into your hotel, you explore the town’s bustling bazaar and reflect on the immense landscapes you’ve conquered.
Distance: 230 km
Time: 8–10 hours
After several days of intense riding, today is a chance to unwind in Kargil, a town rich in history and culture. You can choose to relax or explore its surroundings. A visit to the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, about 60 km away, offers a sobering reminder of the 1999 Kargil War, with tributes to the fallen soldiers and views of Tiger Hill, a key battleground.
Alternatively, a ride into the Suru Valley reveals a greener side of Ladakh, with views of the majestic Nun-Kun peaks. The town’s market is a great place to shop for dried apricots and Pashmina shawls. As evening falls, enjoy a warm Ladakhi meal and prepare for the final leg of your journey.
The final major ride of the journey takes you back to Leh, retracing the scenic route through Namika La (3,700m) and Fotu La (4,108m). The barren, wind-swept landscapes are just as stunning as before, with stops at Lamayuru Monastery and the Indus-Zanskar confluence adding moments of reflection.
By evening, you arrive in Leh, where a celebratory dinner marks the end of this incredible adventure. Sharing stories over butter tea and thukpa, there’s a deep sense of accomplishment, knowing you’ve conquered one of the world’s most challenging motorcycle routes.
Distance: 215 km
Time: 6–7 hours
After an early breakfast, you’ll transfer to Leh Airport for your flight back to Delhi. Upon arrival in Delhi, you’ll be greeted by the city’s vibrant energy once again.
